It’s the 15th day since U.S. Soccer gave WPS 15 days to find a sixth team, but don’t expect major news today.
-
“Monday’s deadline could get pushed. #WPS set to deliver presentation to USSF. Looks like that won’t be until Tuesday.
-
WPS CEO Jennifer O’Sullivan was on Fox Soccer Channel’s Goals on Sunday on … well, Sunday … and mentioned an upcoming meeting without specifying a date.So what’s on the agenda? O’Sullivan gave a little bit of a hint in talking with the Marietta Daily Journal, where William Bretherton was covering the College Cup, saying WPS could point a pipeline of expansion prospects that didn’t exist a year ago.

O’Sullivan might also need to explain in further detail why the league’s sixth team is no longer around.
-
“As I understand it, the USSF felt the 6-team rqmt would pave the way for mJ’s return. Clearly not an option. WPS must make that clear Tues.
-
O’Sullivan has denied that the USSF ever specified which team should be the sixth — magicJack, Connecticut or something else. But it’s entirely possible that some people on the board had no idea of the width of the rift between WPS and magicJack’s Dan Borislow. We now pause for comment from anyone connected with U.S. Soccer.(cough)Back to the issues — we’re already seeing some talk that Division II might not be a bad option. The idea would be to tell the league that they’re not Division I given the current salaries and conditions. Consider this:
-
“We all want #WPS to survive & a league for gnrtns to come. What we must ensure is that the standards are professional, fair, sustainable.
-
“Do I think #WPS is sustainable? Yes. Do I think it has the fan base? Heck yes. But need standards set or the brand suffers. Reality.
-
And that brought Hope Solo into the discussion at last:
-
“@JulieFoudy standards are important. Well said jules. And congrats to Stanford!
-
“If one fails to meet the criteria to graduate from University shall they still be handed their diploma bc its helpful to their future?
-
Some of us had a funny discussion about our college days after that and a more serious discussion about whether universities are supposed to help their students graduate, but that’s not really worth recapping here.So now we’ve heard from virtually every player on the WNT who uses Twitter. Let’s check for a comment from U.S. women’s national team captain Christie Rampone.
-
I’ll spare everyone my rant about Tim Tebow getting all the credit instead of the Broncos’ running backs, defense and a coaching staff that has figured out how to win with a quarterback who can’t fit into a conventional system. Let’s just say her Tweets show the importance of sponsorship.Peter Wilt’s suggestion for a radically revised version of women’s pro soccer (note lowercase) started a good discussion. Former Boston Breakers executive Andy Crossley checked in to make the case that building revenue may be a more important goal than cutting expenses.

So maybe WPS and USSF could just compromise and go to Division II for a year, with the prospect of building back up to D1 in 2013? Well …
-
“Lastly, there are murmurs that at least two owners have considered leaving the league in the event WPS gets demoted to D2 status.
-
Being an astute student of history, Jenna notes:
-
“@AlondraH18 Right. We’ll see if they’re just playing a game of brinkmanship though.
-
Granted, you could say that about almost any stance in this discussion, including the prospect that other owners would run screaming if Borislow were reinstated.Back on the field, congratulations to Stanford for a long-awaited and much-deserved breakthrough national championship. And congratulations to my alma mater, Duke, for a fantastic season. The Blue Devils did a good bit better in their second national final than they did in their first.

..and that really does sum it up. Despite all the conjecture, no one knows how this will all pan out, but it’s been fun listening to all the ideas.
