MLS: Eight worthy playoff teams pre-Cup

If the season ended today, we would have two playoff teams from the East and six from the West.

Want more East-West factoids?:

– In fact, the third-place Eastern team (Toronto) would be barely ahead of the last-place team (Chivas USA) in the West. The tiebreakers are head-to-head (haven’t played yet), goal difference (both at -2), then goals scored (Toronto leads 11-10).

– The East leader (New York) has a negative goal difference (-1). Columbus (+5) is the only East team with a positive goal difference.

Jeff Sagarin’s ratings, which take schedule strength thus far into account, have only two East teams in the playoffs: Columbus (2nd) and Toronto (7th, barely). New York is 10th. The remaining five teams are 12th through 16th.

Frankly, no one could really complain if the eight teams currently in place reached the playoffs. Of the teams on the outside, Dallas and Chivas USA show occasional glimpses, New England could be decent if the injuries ever heal, and Kansas City is one goal-scorer away from contention. Toronto has one of the league’s all-time greats (Dwayne De Rosario), an emerging young forward (O’Brian White) and a solid keeper (Stefan Frei), but does anyone south of the border really want to see that team in the playoffs?

We could see a shakeup in this cozy division of haves and have-nots, though, as the World Cup borrows players for a while, starting now. Los Angeles, Columbus and Chivas USA are the teams hit hardest. Then they could be shaken up again after the post-Cup transfer market shakes out.

“Good,” say fans of D.C. United and anyone who was a little bored with this week’s 0-0 and 1-0 affairs.

Here’s how they stand heading into the break, with injuries taken into account.

STANDINGS/LINEUPS

1. Los Angeles Galaxy (23 pts/9 games played)

– Drew 0-0 vs. Toronto in the shock result of the week.
– Lineup (4-4-1-1): Josh Saunders; Bryan Jordan RB, Gregg Berhalter CB, Omar Gonzalez CB, Todd Dunivant LB; Charlie Birchall DM, Michael Stephens RM, Jovan Kirovski LM, Juninho AM; Landon Donovan WF, Edson Buddle F. Saunders replaces injured Donovan Ricketts, Jordan remains in for A.J. DeLaGarza (back spasms), Juninho returns but in place of Chris Klein rather than Kirovski.
– Injuries: Sean Franklin (left ankle sprain) hasn’t yet reclaimed his spot at the back, bruiser Dema Kovalenko (right hamstring strain), and Eddie Lewis (left foot contusion) has been questionable.
– The Galaxy will be without Donovan through the World Cup and Buddle at least through pre-Cup camp. Good thing they’ve built that huge lead in the standings.

2. New York Red Bulls (15 / 8 )

– Lost 0-1 vs. Seattle, squandering a superb defensive play by Danleigh Borman, who raced back to clear from what was a wide-open net.
– Lineup (4-4-2): Bouna Coundoul; Jeremy Hall RB, Mike Petke CB, Tim Ream CB, Danleigh Borman LB; Dane Richards RM, Carl Robinson CM, Joel Lindpere CM, Seth Stammler LM; Juan Pablo Angel F, Salou Ibrahim F. Hall returns for Luke Sassano, Borman subs for Roy Miller, Robinson returns from injury to replace Tony Tchani.
– Injuries: attacker Mac Kandji (right foot metatarsal break), defender Kevin Goldthwaite (right adductor surgery), Giorgi Chirgadze (hip surgery)
– The Red Bulls don’t have any U.S. players, but reserve defender Andrew Boyens will play for New Zealand.

3. Columbus Crew (14 / 6)

– Won 1-0 vs. Chivas USA. Gino Padula had two vital goal-line clearances, and Chad Marshall was brought down in the box on a late free kick to set up the Schelotto winner from the spot.
– Lineup (4-4-1-1): Will Hesmer; Frankie Hejduk RB, Chad Marshall CB, Eric Brunner CB, Gino Padula LB; Brian Carroll DM, Eddie Gaven RM, Robbie Rogers LM, Adam Moffat AM; Guillermo Barros Schelotto WF, Steven Lenhart F. No changes — Padula keeps spot ahead of O’Rourke.
– Start the juggling — Marshall and Rogers are off to camp. Imagine if Hejduk had gone, too. The good news is that the team is healthy.

4. Houston Dynamo (13 / 9)

– Lost 1-3 at Salt Lake.
– Lineup (4-3-3): Pat Onstad; Craig Waibel RB; Bobby Boswell CB, Adrian Serioux CB, Mike Chabala LB; Lovel Palmer DM, Richard Mulrooney DM, Brian Mullan RM, Corey Ashe LM, Brad Davis AM; Dominic Oduro F.
– Injuries: Eddie Robinson (right knee sprain) would surely replace Serioux if healthy. The big loss is Geoff Cameron (right knee), who had moved into central midfield. Losing Cam Weaver (right knee strain) and Luis Angel Landin (concussion) leaves striker options limited.
– Brian Ching (left hamstring strain) returned to the field in the second half, just in time to bid farewell and go to U.S. camp.

5. Colorado Rapids (13 / 8 )

– Won 1-0 at D.C., with United getting possession but not many chances.
– Lineup (4-5-1): Matt Pickens; Marvell Wynne RB, Drew Moor CB, Julien Baudet CB, Danny Earls LB; Pablo Mastroeni DM, Jeff Larentowicz DM, Mehdi Ballouchy CM, Wells Thompson LM, Omar Cummings RM; Conor Casey F. With Earls back at LB, everyone shifts over a slot, with Wynne at RB and Kimura (left ankle stress fracture) out. Formation is slightly different, with wings pushed up ahead of defensive mid pair, not the usual straight 4-4-2.
– Injuries: Kimura could be out a while. Winger Jamie Smith was doubtful for the game with a right hamstring strain.

6. San Jose Earthquakes (13 / 7)

– Drew 0-0 at New England.
– Lineup (4-4-2): Joe Cannon; Chris Leitch RB, Bobby Burling CB, Jason Hernandez CB, Ramiro Corrales LB; Joey Gjertsen RM, Brandon McDonald CM, Andre Luiz CM, Bobby Convey LM; Ryan Johnson F, Chris Wondolowski F. No changes. Again.
– Injuries: Ike Opara (right hamstring strain), Steve Beitashour (right hamstring strain), Arturo Alvarez (left hamstring strain).

7. Real Salt Lake (13 / 8 )

– Won 3-1 vs. Houston.
– Lineup (4-4-2): Nick Rimando; Robbie Russell RB, Jamison Olave CB, Nat Borchers CB, Chris Wingert LB; Kyle Beckerman DM, Andy Williams RM, Will Johnson LM, Javier Morales AM; Alvaro Saborio F, Robbie Findley F. Russell bumps Wingert to LB with Tony Beltran out.
– Injuries: midfielder Nelson Gonzalez (left hamstring), striker Fabian Espindola (left ankle sprain)
– World Cup: Findley might be a long shot to make the final U.S. squad, but he’ll be in camp.

8. Seattle Sounders (12 / 9)

– Won 1-0 at New York, avenging a loss from earlier in the season and hopefully silencing the panic for a moment. Fredy Montero responded to his benching by coming in as a sub to score the lone goal.
– Lineup (4-3-3): Kasey Keller; James Riley RB, Tyrone Marshall CB, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado CB, Leo Gonzalez LB; Patrick Ianni RM, Freddie Ljungberg CM, Peter Vagenas LM; Sanna Nyassi RF, Steve Zakuani LF, Brad Evans F. Ianni for injured Osvaldo Alonso (right quad strain). Nyassi in for Montero.
– Injuries: Alonso, Pat Noonan (right hamstring strain), Michael Fucito (right knee contusion), Nate Jaqua (lower abdominal tear).

9. FC Dallas (11 / 8 )

– Drew 1-1 at Philadelphia
– Lineup (4-4-1-1): Kevin Hartman; Zach Loyd RB, George John CB, Ugo Ihemelu CB, Heath Pearce LB; Atiba Harris RM, Daniel Hernandez CM; Dax McCarty CM, Brek Shea LM; David Ferreira WF, Jeff Cunningham F. No change.
– Injuries: Not getting a chance to see defender Kyle Davies (arm fracture).
– Pearce is in U.S. camp, very much on the bubble in terms of the final squad.

10. Toronto FC (10 / 8 )

– Drew 0-0 at Los Angeles
– Lineup (4-4-2): Stefan Frei; Maksim Usanov RB, Nana Attakora CB, Adrian Cann CB, Nick Garcia LB; Amadou Sanyang M, Julian de Guzman CM, Sam Cronin M, Nick LaBrocca LM; Dwayne De Rosario F, Chad Barrett F. Garcia for Dan Gargan (right ankle sprain). Cronin for Jacob Peterson.
– Injuries: Ty Harden (right leg laceraion), Emmanuel Gomez (knee)

11. Chivas USA (10 / 9)

– Lost 0-1 at Columbus. Costly mistake by Justin Braun, bringing down Chad Marshall in the box for a late PK.
– Lineup (4-4-1-1): Zach Thornton; Mariano Trujillo RB, Dario Delgado CB, Michael Umana CB, Jonathan Bornstein LB; Michael Lahoud RM, Blair Gavin CM, Ben Zemanski CM, Jesus Padilla LM; Sacha Kljestan WF, Justin Braun F. Lahoud, back from suspension, replaces Gerson Mayen.
– Injuries: Maykel Galindo (left ankle sprain) just never seems to be fully healthy up front. Ante Jazic (knee strain) could earn a spot at the back whenever he returns.
– Bye bye Bornstein and Kljestan for a while, though the latter may have to show something in camp to assure himself a place on the U.S. squad.

12. Chicago Fire (9 / 8 )

– Drew 2-2 at Kansas City. Went ahead 2-0 but couldn’t hold.
– Lineup (4-4-1-1): Andrew Dykstra; Dasan Robinson RB, C.J. Brown CB, Wilman Conde CB, Krzysztof Krol LB; Patrick Nyarko RM, Logan Pause CM, Baggio Husidic CM, Julio Martinez LM; Marco Pappa AM, Collins John F. Robinson for Tim Ward (left calf strain). Peter Lowry out of midfield with Martinez in. The John-Brian McBride shuffle continues. Weren’t they supposed to play together as they did at Fulham?
– Injuries: John Thorrington (quad strain), who could be useful in midfield. Calen Carr (quad strain), who might struggle for playing time with John and McBride rotating as a long striker.

13. New England Revolution (8 / 9)

– Drew 0-0 vs. San Jose.
– Lineup (4-4-1-1): Preston Burpo; Kevin Alston RB, Cory Gibbs CB, Pat Phelan CB, Seth Sinovic LB; Joseph Niouky DM, Chris Tierney DM, Sainey Nyassi RM, Zak Boggs LM, Marko Perovic AM; Kheli Dube F. Alston’s return pushes out makeshift RB Khano Smith. Phelan moves to the back for injured Barnes, with Perovic back from suspension.
– Injuries: Edgaras Jankauskas (hamstring), Darrius Barnes (right foot sprain), Michael Videira (ankle), Emmanuel Osei (right leg laceration), Matt Reis (shoulder, knee surgeries), Taylor Twellman (concussion). And Shalrie Joseph is out with personal issues. Ouch.

14. Kansas City Wizards (8 / 7)

– Drew 2-2 vs. Chicago. Rallied from two down.
– Lineup (alleged 4-3-3): Jimmy Nielsen; Michael Harrington RB, Pablo Escobar CB, Jimmy Conrad CB, Roger Espinoza LB; Graham Zusi R/CM, Jack Jewsbury CM, Davy Arnaud L/CM; Josh Wolff RF, Ryan Smith LF, Kei Kamara CF. Zusi in for Stephane Auvray (right knee strain). Kamara replaces Chance Myers and pushes Wolff back to flank.
– Injury: Zoltan Hercegfalvi (knee sprain).
– Forward Roger Espinoza is playing for Honduras. Conrad and Wolff have both featured in the World Cup for the U.S. team but didn’t get the call this time.

15. Philadelphia Union (4 / 7)

– Drew 1-1 vs. Dallas.
– Lineup (4-4-2): Chris Seitz; Cristian Arrieta, Michael Orozco CB, Danny Califf CB, Jordan Harvey; Kyle Nakazawa, Andrew Jacobson, Fred, Jack McInerney; Sebastien Le Toux F, Alejandro Moreno F. Stefani Miglioranzi returns from suspension, bumping out Shea Salinas. Sebastien Le Toux is back, bumping McInerney back to midfield and bumping out … Roger Torres? What is it with Peter Nowak and playing time for midfield phenoms?
– Injury: Toni Stahl (left knee strain).

16. D.C. United (3 / 8 )

– Lost 0-1 vs. Colorado. Would’ve won a dribbling and ball possession contest, but the ball has to go into the net sometime.
– Lineup (4-4-2): Bill Hamid; Jordan Graye RB, Carey Talley CB, Juan Manuel Pena CB, Rodney Wallace LB; Kurt Morsink DM, Boyzzz Khumalo RM, Clyde Simms CM, Christian Castillo LM; Danny Allsopp F, Adam Cristman F. Pena replaces Devon McTavish. Andy Najar returned from injury and appeared as a sub.
– Injuries: United’s roster can only improve while others are weakened. Chris Pontius (right hamstring) and Santino Quaranta (staph infection) are due back soon. Luciano Emilio has more time to work his way back into the team, and Najar is back from a right ankle problem. Still out and forcing some patchwork fixes at the back: Dejan Jakovic (right clavicle), Marc Burch (foot surgery), Bryan Namoff (post-concussion syndrome).
